On 4th October 2021, Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram stopped working for approximately 6 hours. All these platforms showed an error which was that it kept on refreshing. To be more precise – messages could not be sent or received on Whatsapp, Instagram feed was not refreshing and Facebook was taking forever to load.

Users were extremely frustrated and turned to Twitter, Snapchat and even iMessages to take out their aggression. A spokesperson from Facebook emailed India Today regarding the outage situation of the social media platforms. The statement said – “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

The owner of the popular Twitter account MalwareTech, Marcus Hutchins who has ruled out various cyber attacks on a global level also tweeted about this breakdown. The tweet said, “Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram are all down due to a BGP configuration error, which means it’s only a matter of time before someone tweets a pew-pew map screenshot and claims it’s a global cyber attack.”

Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp also acknowledged this outage by getting on Twitter.

Downdetector has detected that Whatsapp experienced 9000 crashes, Instagram reported 8000 issues and 4000 users reported Facebook issues.
