On July 14, 2024, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, confirmed that the company will invest “hundreds of billions of dollars” to build the infrastructure needed to reach superintelligence.
Meta artificial general intelligence (AGI) is going to set the standard that OpenAI or Google will take time to reach.
In a recent post shared on Threads, the multibillionaire CEO revealed that Meta is building a new class of AI data centers, some of which will be so large they’ll rival the size and power output of small cities.
The CEO highlighted Meta’s ability to fund these big projects with its huge advertising revenue.
He said, “We have the capital from our business to invest billions of dollars.”
In 2024, Meta generated over $165 billion in revenue and more than $60 billion in profit. This revenue allows the company to outspend most competitors in AI.
Meta is working on “superintelligence.” The term describes AI systems that are smarter than humans in every area. Zuckerberg said the company isn’t focused on smarter tools or assistants. Instead, it’s working on AGI-AI that can learn, reason, and do any intellectual task better than humans.
Meta’s superintelligence and AGI put the company in line with other tech leaders like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic in the global push for general-purpose AI.
The company’s multi-gigawatt data center is a new type of AI facility. It meets the huge computing needs of superintelligence. “Prometheus,” a multi-gigawatt data center, is currently under construction in Ohio and is expected to deliver 1-2 gigawatts (GW) of power when it comes online in 2026.
This is not the only project Meta is working on. Another, even larger project named “Hyperion” is also being planned in Louisiana. This multi-gigawatt data center will scale up to 5 GW, making it one of the most powerful AI clusters in the world.
Zuckerberg stated, “Just one of these projects covers a significant part of the footprint of Manhattan.”
To grasp the size of these data centers, look at modern hyperscale ones. Data centers from Amazon and Microsoft typically run on 100 to 200 megawatts. This means Meta’s multi-gigawatt clusters will be 10 to 50 times bigger than the hyperscale data centers we see now.
These clusters will run Meta’s open-source Llama models. They will also support a new system called “Behemoth.” This next-gen model is expected to be closed-source and frontier-level AI.
According to the reports, the facilities will rely on a mix of renewable energy and on site natural gas generators to meet their power needs. Some infrastructure parts are being put together in temporary tents. This speeds up deployment while the company finishes the permanent structures.
Meta has also launched a specialized research and development division called “Meta Superintelligence Labs” to lead efforts toward AGI. The motive of this team is to develop superintelligent AI systems.
The company is set to include the Scale AI founder, Alexandr Wang, as part of the reorganization of Meta’s AI efforts under Mark Zuckerberg.
High-profile figures like Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub, and Daniel Gross, former CEO and co-founder of Safe Superintelligence Inc., have been approached, and some offers reportedly reached as high as $200 million.
“I’m focused on building the most elite and talent-dense team in the industry for our superintelligence effort,” said Mark Zuckerberg.
Meta plans to spend $64–72 billion on capital expenses in 2025. Most of this will go towards AI infrastructure.
The company is set to roll out its AI models across various products. These include Meta AI in Messenger and Instagram, Ray-Ban smart glasses, and future AI ad platforms. This move positions the company as a leader in consumer tech and in the future of artificial intelligence.
Meta Superintelligence and Artificial General Intelligence mark a turning point in the AI arms race. The pivot toward AGI is no longer just about staying competitive; it’s about setting a new place in the AI world.
Whether it can deliver superintelligence before its rivals is still uncertain, but one thing is clear: Meta is betting big, and the world is watching.
